At the end of August, however, Sonny and his band, the Sunsets, released their debut LP Tomorrow Is Alright. The Sunsets have a lot of things working in their favor in terms of influences, resurrecting vintage clap-along doo-wop, as well as’70s-era Lou Reed and Jonathan Richman. The innocent, late night summer jam opener, Too Young to Burn, is packed with hooks. Sonny and the Sunsets have a fresh take on a sound that dominated the American airwaves in the ’50s and ’60s. The sound is raw and vintage, the type of songs you would expect to wake up to when your alarm sounds the AM radio. Although the songs aren’t far off from Jonathan Richman’s There’s an Abominable Snowman in the Supermarket, the album is easy to lose yourself in. A dose of nostalgia or a new take on an old style – whatever you call it – make time to sit down and give this album a thorough listen.

Tomorrow Is Alright matches 10 of Sonny Smith's wry, easygoing tunes with a far-reaching pastiche of vintage trappings, never feeling dutifully retro but rather, like their tough-to-pin-down citymates Girls, intangibly classic. Earth Girl Helen Brown.

Sonny's debut album with The Sunsets appeals to the heart with charming and straightforward, confessional pop songs in the realm of Jonathan Richman and '50s doo-wop R&B. Death Cream" is a languid jam where Sonny travels around town rubbing cream on his friends and himself. With its wandering piano line and dawdling pace, it is the perfect song for a hot day and a dozen beers.

Sonny & the Sunsets’ busted beach-pop songs spark recollections of doo wop’s otherworldly despair, the kitchen sink savoir faire of The Raincoats, a dose of goofball humor from the Michael Hurley school, and positive possibilities exuded by Jonathan Richman, with and without The Modern Lovers. Helmed by the acclaimed singer, songwriter, playwright, author & onetime troubadour pianoman Sonny Smith, The Sunsets have featured a revolving door lineup that became permanent with Kelley Stoltz, Tahlia Harbour and Ryan Browne. The LP is limited to 500 copies. Tomorrow is Alright hits on all the right zones, from sly VU-like observations to the true bedlam explored by Holy Modal Rounders. All the while, Sonny’s pen is soaked with an EC comics sense of storytelling, touching equally on the macabre, the absurd, the humorous, and above all, the entertaining.
