Ask the Night is Orenda Fink's second album of 2009, the first being O+S, a one-off collaboration with the Scalpelist (aka Cedric LeMoyne of Remy Zero) via the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art in Omaha. That album took her outside of her comfort zone, setting her vocals in ever more intricate soundscapes and tempering its shortcomings with a see-what-sticks experimental approach. Ask the Night was recorded in Omaha and Athens, Georgia- two of Fink's old haunts- and written partly with fellow Alabaman Chris Lawson, a Birmingham poet and artist who designed the album cover.

This is a stripped-down album, devoid of computers and electronics of any kind, and Fink uses the opportunity to flex her muscles as a competent Southern Gothic-styled songwriter. Flanked by little more than her guitar, vocal harmonies, and a sparse Appalachian string band, she steers her voice through tales of Greyhound bus rides, the South, and swampy landscapes. The mood is hushed throughout, although songs like "The Mural" build up to towering climaxes before resuming their serene, earthy pitch

Orenda Fink is an American musician, t, writer, and half of the Dream pop duo Azure Ray. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Fink is also a member of O+S, Closeness, and has previously recorded or performed with Bright Eyes, Conor Oberst, Moby, Rilo Kiley Now It's Overhead and more. She is married to Todd Fink (formerly Todd Baechle) of The Faint, another Saddle Creek Records band.
