WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln. I. Allegro non troppo. Gilels made two commercial recordings of the Brahms Piano Concerto N. in the studio with Fritz Reiner and Eugen Jochum. The live magisterial performance of Brahms’s Piano Concerto N. dates from 1971when Gilels was at his peak, prior to his studio performance with Jochum. The live recital dates from 1974 and features vibrant performances of Debussy and Prokofiev, all particular favourites of the pianist. Recorded in brilliant stereo, these WDR-sourced performances have never been released before
Pianists Emil Gilels (left) and Yakov Flier who took first and third prizes respectively at the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition in Brussels, Belgium Gilels was in the midst of completing a recording cycle of Beethoven's piano sonatas for the German record company Deutsche Grammophon when he died unexpectedly in a hospital in Moscow. His recording of the "Hammerklavier" Sonata received a Gramophone Award in 1984. Gilels recorded with his daughter, including Mozart's double piano concerto with Karl Böhm and the Vienna Philharmonic and Schubert's Fantasie in F minor for piano duet.

Back in the '50s and '60s when RCA was one of the two dominant American classical record companies, the big debate was over which of their two recordings of Brahms Piano Concerto in B flat major was better: the Emil Gilels with Fritz Reiner from 1958 or the Sviatoslav Richter with Leinsdorf from 1960. Both are with the Chicago Symphony at the peak of its strength and sensitivity. Both had RCA's stereo sound at the height of its clarity and reality
Brahms: Piano Concerto No. 2, Beethoven: Piano Sonata No. 23. Johannes Brahms. Brahms: Piano Concerto No. 2, MacDowell: Piano Concerto No. 2. Piano Concerto N. in B-flat major, O. 3: Allegro appassionato. 3: Andante. 4. 3: Allegretto grazioso. Performer: Emil Gilels. Orchestra: Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Conductor: Fritz Reiner. Nevertheless, the sound on this standard red book CD is exemplary: crystal clear, warmly alive and with a wide sound stage that fills the room. When using my receiver's Dolby PLIIx decoder the music approximates the airy brilliance of an SACD. These are two unforgettable performances that feature spectacular artistry and they are recorded in pristine CD sound.

The Piano Concerto No. 2 in B♭ major, Op. 83, by Johannes Brahms is separated by a gap of 22 years from his first piano concerto. Brahms began work on the piece in 1878 and completed it in 1881 while in Pressbaum near Vienna. It is dedicated to his teacher, Eduard Marxsen. 105, No. 2). Within the concerto, the cello plays the theme for the first three minutes, before the piano comes in. However, the gentler melodic piece that the piano plays soon gives way to a stormy theme in B♭ minor. Emil Gilels with Eugen Jochum, and the Berliner Philharmoniker (recorded in 1972 on Deutsche Grammophon), and an earlier interpretation with Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (recorded in 1958 on RCA Victor). Hélène Grimaud with Andris Nelsons and the Vienna Philharmonic (2013, Deutsche Grammophon).
