For its 39th season closer, Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles has decided to put together a concert that explores the portrayals of LGBTQ people on film. Our offices are in West Hollywood, said Joe Nadeau, the group’s artistic director and conductor. We are surrounded by Hollywood, which is the filmmaking center of the universe. It weaves together songs from films with video, narration and show-stopping dance numbers for what Nadeau said is a unique experience, unlike anything that we’ve ever done before. Some of what the audience can expect to hear includes Cole Porter’s Anything Goes from the 1934 musical by the same name, Secret Love from the 1953 film Calamity Jane and This is Me from the 2017 film The Greatest Showman, as well as a suite of songs from the 2005 film Brokeback Mountain.

On October 24, 2010 a large group of chorus members gathered with their friends and family at Immanuel Presbyterian Church to record a live version of Cyndi Lauper’s song True Colors: No words were needed to feel the powerful message of love, unity, and hope conveyed by this musical performance. The response from around the world was incredible (including around 700,000 views to date) – prompting the Chorus leadership to reach out to folks at the It Gets Better Project™ to explore more options for bringing together the work of our organizations. It Gets Better will be developed collaboratively by a creative team led for the Chorus by Liesel Reinhart of Speak Theater Arts (STA). In 2009, GMCLA collaborated with STA and the Tectonic Theater Company for an imaginative world premiere staging of The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later, An Epilogue at the Broad Stage in Santa Monica.
