Surface Image is the new album-length composition for solo piano and 40-channel 1-bit electronics from composer Tristan Perich and pianist Vicky Chow. Surface Image is a stunning marriage of Perich's inspired electronic aesthetic and Chow's nuanced yet fiercely virtuosic playing. It's a landmark release for Perich, being his first major release focusing solely on his work, as well as his first large-scale piano composition.

Tristan Perich: Surface Image. blue highlight denotes track pick. Label: New Amsterdam. Composer Perich keeps finding new ways to develop his glitch-classical aesthetic. He's written pieces for acoustic instruments and 1-bit electronics before (seek out his piece "Formations" on cellist Mariel Roberts' album Nonextraneous Sounds). This time, it's 40 channels of 1-bit digital chirp arrayed against an hour of post-minimalist piano writing, played here by the virtuoso Vicky Chow
Tristan Perich and Vicky Chow: Surface Image. By Liquid Music · 24 March 2016 ·. Thank you to Jayme Halbritter Photography for these beautiful photographs from last night's show.
Indie-classical is making a big presence lately, and here pianist Vicky Chow aligns herself with the 40-channel 1 bit-electronics (sounds with just one piece of information) of Tristan Perich. On paper it hardly seems like a feasible collision of sounds, but the remarkable skill of the pair and their ability to intertwine piano notes with electronica with absolute precision showcases the ultimate meeting between organic and electronic.
