One young admirer of the Basie orchestra in Kansas City was a teenage alto saxophone player named Charlie Parker. He was especially enthralled by their tenor saxophone player Lester Young, who played long flowing melodic lines that wove in and out of the chordal structure of the tune but somehow always made musical sense. Young was equally daring with his rhythm and phrasing as with his approach to harmonic structures in his solos. While swing music tended to feature orchestrated big band arrangements, bebop music highlighted improvisation. Typically, a theme (a "head," often the main melody of a pop or jazz standard of the swing era) would be presented together at the beginning and the end of each piece, with improvisational solos based on the chords of the tune.
Swing Music was the pop music of the 1930’s. It was mostly performed by Big Bands and was above all else dance music. Swing grew out of New Orleans Jazz and the evolved into Bebop. So lets quickly take a look at all three genres: Element. New Orleans (1910’s).
42: Kenny Drew (1928-1993) New York City-born Drew – who served his musical apprenticeship as a sideman for Buddy DeFranco, Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young and Charlie Parker – was a highly-regarded bebop pianist and composer who enjoyed a long and fruitful association with tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon, when both musicians lived in Denmark during the 60s and 70. A pioneer of block chords, Shearing’s group – which including the distinctive sound of the vibraphone – became hugely popular and influential in the 50s.
Lester Young's serious medical conditions manifested themseves in several ways on his ability to play his tenor saxophone. For instance, at the September 1949 session with Hank Jones, "he seemed to be having difficulty with sound production. Gelly also states that at the January 12 and 13, 1956 sessions "one of his problems was shortness of breath. Among the highlights on this album are a "sprightly" All of Me and the delightful This Year's Kisses, which features outstanding solos by Vic Dickenson on trombone and Roy Eldridge on trumpet. This track was taken from a justly famous album called Jazz Giants. Another song worth mentioning here is They Can't Take That Away From Me (track 8), where Young plays clarinet instead of his tenor sax.
