Two decades since his last cycle of Brahms Symphonies with the Dresden Staatskapelle (RCA), the late great Kurt Sanderling has surpassed that achievement with his own Berlin Symphony Orchestra in this 4-CD jewel box set from Hanssler. Very much in the tradition of Klemperer - but with mellower sound - Sanderling manages to elicit both the power and the softness of Brahms, thus revealing the greatness of these four very different works with equal beauty of form and feeling.
The Alto Rhapsody, Op. 53, is a composition for contralto, male chorus, and orchestra by Johannes Brahms, a setting of verses from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Harzreise im Winter. It was written in 1869, as a wedding gift for Robert and Clara Schumann's daughter, Julie. Brahms scholars have long speculated that the composer may have had romantic feelings for Julie, which he may have integrated into the text and music of the Alto Rhapsody.

Brahms: Symphony No. 38:12. Philippe Herreweghe, Orchestre des Champs-Élysées. Recorded: 18-20 July 2011. The four symphonies of Brahms form the kernel of our musical heritage, along with such works as the Monteverdi Vespers, the Bach Cello Suites and Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations. To mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Orchestre des Champs-Élysées and the half-century (!) of Collegium Vocale Gent, we conceived the project of recording them in tandem with major choral works by this composer whose instrumental and vocal worlds are in essence inextricable.
