Bloomington is a jazz album by Branford Marsalis, featuring the trio that had recorded his studio album The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born. It peaked at number 9 on the Top Jazz Albums chart.
Produced by Delfeayo Marsalis and recorded by Patrick Smith direct to DAT digital, BLOOMINGTON captures the intense give-and-take of three master musicians testing each other's mettle. Three of the six pieces on the album - "Xavier's Lair," "The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born," and "Citizen Tain" - were written by Branford. Also included are the Robert Hurst's original "Roused About" and the Thelonious Monk classic, "Friday the 13th. Which leads us back to BLOOMINGTON. There will be people who claim that, by virtue of Branford's powerful position in the public eye, this album redraws the boundaries of contemporary jazz, and elevates the discipline of improvisation to acrophobia heights. But Branford himself will have none of it. "Records should be judged by musical content alone, and not by visibility.
This live set (part of which was included in the performance film The Music Tells You) features Branford Marsalis and his longtime trio (bassist Robert Hurst and drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts) really stretching out on six pieces. Most of the playing is unfortunately very long-winded and rather dull. Marsalis seems content to play the part of a chameleon, doing his impressions of late-period Coltrane, Sonny Rollins and (when he switches to soprano) Ornette Coleman. Also, the music lacks variety and Marsalis is off-mic part of the time
