Wilhelm Stenhammar (1871–1927) is one of those very late Scandinavian Romantics in this case, a Swede who I’ve described before as setting with the midnight su. Announced as Volume 1, this BIS release launches a new cycle of Wilhelm Stenhammar’s works for string quartet, which are six in numbered ones, plus an unnumbered one in F Minor which comes chronologically between Nos. 3 and 4, but which the composer withdrew. Wilhelm Stenhammar (1871–1927) is one of those very late Scandinavian Romantics in this case, a Swede who I’ve described before as setting with the midnight sun. A close contemporary of Carl Nielsen (1865–1931), Stenhammar has been overshadowed by the great Dane, and, as a result, I think, somewhat undervalued and neglected.

Stenhammar was born in Stockholm, and was the brother of architect Ernst Stenhammar. He received his first musical education in Stockholm. He then went to Berlin to further his studies in music. He became a glowing admirer of German music, particularly that of Richard Wagner and Anton Bruckner. Stenhammar was considered the finest Swedish pianist of his time. Pianists who venture into the realm of the string quartet often wind up writing compositions which sound as though they were composed at, and are perhaps better played on, the piano. That Stenhammar's works show no such trait is because for nearly half of his life, he worked intimately with the Aulin Quartet, the top Swedish string quartet of his day and one of the best then performing in Europe. In fact, he toured throughout Europe with them for many years and a piano quintet was nearly always featured on their programmes.
Only 1 left in stock (more on the way). After this, Stenhammar wrote no further quartets. The farewell to his friend was also the farewell to this genre. As a set of quartets, these are - I venture to say - rewarding to repeated listening. They are quality work and sadly neglected for no good reason at all. Much of Stenhammar's work in other genres, while pleasing, gives evidence of being written by a minor composer. If someone played these quartets to you blindfold (. as "new discoveries" from a known composer's oeuvre), you might guess very much higher than "Stenhammar"! I have lived with them for.
