Warmhearted but clear-eyed, the Schubert Ensemble of London's recordings of the Piano Quartets of Fauré are anything but French performances. Where French performers can parse their emotions down to the most infinitesimal gradation of feeling but are intellectually profoundly superficial, these English performers are intellectually clear and lucid, but their interpretations are still deeply felt. The Schubert Ensemble achieves that rare balance of mind and heart that makes its Fauré performances extremely persuasive, perhaps even more persuasive for a non-French audience than even the best French performances.
Schubert’s famous Quintet needs little introduction, and is certainly the most famous work named after a fish. Unusual, but not unique, since Hummel had set the trend with his effervescent E flat Quintet and Paumgartner intended to feature the two pieces together in one of his regular soirées

His two piano quartets illustrate the point well. These are late romantic works with a firm grounding in the twentieth century. Richly textured, virtuosic, and highly individual, they display traits characteristic of Mahler, Wagner, Fauré, and Ravel, while also remaining heavily indebted to the distinctive sound of Romanian folk music.
The Schubert Ensemble again demonstrate their devotion to the masterworks of 19th-century chamber music. Gramophone, January 2010. This is a performance which fairly crackles with passion. With outstanding sound and musically intelligent playing, the Schubert Ensemble of London’s previous instalments in their Brahms and Mendelssohn Piano Quartet cycle have elicited much praise, and this disc is no exception. Classic CD, January 1999. another winning release. George Enescu: Piano Quartets Nos 1 and 2. This is an extremely fine First Piano Quartet: lean, impassioned, and technically expert, played with the kind of give-and-take between musicians that is essential to making this music by a chamber musician wor. his performance is a joy to hear – Fanfare, USA.
