Son Lux is an American experimental band. Originally the solo project and moniker of founding member Ryan Lott, the band's first three albums, At War with Walls & Mazes, We Are Rising and Lanterns shaped the band's unique sound through post-rock and electronica influences. With the release of their fourth studio album, Bones, in 2015, Rafiq Bhatia and Ian Chang joined Son Lux, transforming the project into a three-piece band.

You might say that At War with Walls and Mazes was an album 29 years in the making. A pianist since the age of six, full-time composer Ryan Lott has literally been making music all of his life. He's written pieces for choreography, collaborated with multimedia artists, and churns out two pieces a day for New York post-production studio Fluid. Lott may have accomplished quite a bit in less than three decades, but in his mind, there was still plenty of ground left to cover. So, after three years spent collecting samples, he set out to piece together his first pop record. The result, At War with Walls and Mazes, is a dense, meticulously crafted haze of Baroque instrumentation, electronic pulses and hip-hop beats. Overstuffed with samples, sounds and styles, Walls and Mazes seems like the very definition of "aural overload" on first blush.
Son Lux is Ryan Lott, on first glance just another dude with a computer. In recent years the music world has been flooded by â?dudes with computers,' cutting and pasting stuff together and calling it music, a process made significantly easier in recent years with the ease of current software. But Lott is no layman getting lucky with a patchwork of samples. A piano player since a young age, a punk in high school and a composition student in college (at Indiana University, B-town represent), Lott knows what he's doing. Perhaps as a result of this atypical background, At War with Walls and Mazes is a hard album to pin down. He says he arranged his found sounds starting with the rhythms, rather than melody as he would when composing classically. The result is a hip-hop and electronica-driven sound that somehow maintains an organic, dreamy feel.
