Krysia Osostowicz, Susan Tomes. Sonata for violin & piano No. 2 in A major ("Thun"), Op. 100. 4. Allegro amabile. Krysia Osostowicz, Susan Tomes. 5. Andante tranquillo, Vivace.
Producer – Andrew Keener. Violin – Krysia Osostowicz. Recorded August 25 & 26, 1987. Originally issued on Hyperion CDA66277.
Krysia Ostostowicz and Susan Tomes (Hyperion) have a wonderful naturalness about their playing; it is true chamber music, unlike Itzhak Perlman's over-emphatic live performances with Daniel Barenboim (Sony) or the studio recordings made by Vladimir Ashkenazy (EMI). There's a great deal of honest, if slightly underplayed musicality in Arthur Grumiaux's performances with Gyorgy Sebk (Philips), while Augustin Dumay and Maria Joao Pires (Deutsche Grammophon) are fastidious on detail, but slightly lacking in vision . This was the first time all three sonatas had been accommodated on a single LP. Suk's violin playing is beguilingly direct and unashamedly romantic, while Katchen's approach is powerful yet potently lyrical, and they complement each other perfectly.
Performers: Krysia Osostowicz, violin Susan Tomes, piano. Perhaps I should begin by reminding readers that Krysia Osostowicz (of Polish descent) and the Edinburgh-born Susan Tomes are founder members of Domus-the group whose debut recording of Faure's two piano quartets won them the Gramophone Chamber award in 1986. And once again these two artists affirm their very special affinity with this French composer.
This UK performance from star chamber pianist Susan Tomes and violinist Krysia Osostowicz is a good one, but I’ve been listening to it for years and think it doesn’t quite evoke what’s behind the music. The technical aspect is well done by Tomes and Osostowicz – they are in command and always sound good. But they don’t bring the brio or wrenching tragedy of the music that Yefim Bronfman and Shlomo Mintz do in their exceptional recording of the Faure pair.

Krysia Osostowicz and Susan Tomes are wonderful advocates of its blend of emotional unpredictability and lyrical charm. Indeed, it seems churlish to wish for greater sensuality from Osostowicz in the Andante, and a touch more sparkle from the piano in the finale. There are absolutely no caveats about their handling of the rarefied world of the Second Sonata. A work of brooding intensity, it was written in 1916, after Faure had become deaf and while his son was on active service.
