For Sombres Forets, this album builds upon previous work and extends the act's range much further into melodic post-BM territory. However a lot of BM acts have progressed from depressive BM to depressive melodic post-BM rock in similar ways so this move for Sombres Forets doesn't come as a surprise. La Mort du Soleil falls right into the atmospheric black metal category. Mid paced, it breathes all the way through, with a balance between heavy instrumentation and melancholic piano or guitar passages.

La Mort du Soleil (2013) by Sombres Forets. Labels: Sepulchral Productions. Genres: Black Metal Members: Annatar. Album (Studio full-length).

Annatar, sole member of Sombres Forêts, clearly has no intention of suffering alone. And yet, rather than joining him in some mass suicide ritual, you are subjected to becoming him, crying out like a caged animal in a place where no one can save you but everyone can hear you scream. Whereas that album is dramatically expansive in its scope, La Mort du Soleil feels much more sincere, relying heavily on its unobstructed expressions of pain. However, it is certainly no less ambitious. Indeed, if it is true that great art cannot be created without suffering, this is nothing short of a masterpiece.

There was a five year gap between the release of Royaum De Glace and the release of Sombres Forêts’ latest album, La Mort du Soleil. During that time, the depressive black metal bubble burst from over-saturation by shitty bands. Now the scene is, for all intents and purposes, dead.

Sombres Fore?ts is back with its third album, who sees the band take on a more atmospheric and introspective approach. A journey to dark and stormy lands!

Submit lyrics correction →. 55k. Like.

Sombres Forets - Primary Artist

In theory, La Mort du Soleil (“The Death of the Sun”) should mark an improvement over Sombres Forêts’ previous album, yet it doesn’t. What a wasted opportunity! The album features a professional and definitely interesting production and plenty of seven-string guitars arpeggios and clean passages, but when the instruments go full electric, the guitar sounds severely lacking and put apart from the mix, especially due to its confused and suspended riffing: paradoxically, the bass and the drum pedal are more hearable! What overcomes the rest of the instrumentation are the vocals, but it’s an useless maneuver, since they’re generic and poor Bethlehem’s Rainer Landfermann imitation. Ultimately, the Post-Rock meditative songwriting helps to hide the fact that the album not only doesn’t feature discernible hooks, it doesn’t even have proper songs. Ultimately, Sombres Forêts’ sole member has proven that he isn’t capable of crafting albums: it isn’t a problem, but it means that the project will interest only “Depressive Black Metal” aficionados, and even them may find the production unsuited and irritating to the album’s themes and music.
