Ferdinand Hérold: La somnambule. the disc arrived after about an 8 day wait (likely a delay in US Customs). I was very nervous putting the disc in, though I was more worried about the then unknown sound quality. I was not at all worried about the music or interpretation, as I have the utmost respect for Maestro Bonynge. I have way too many Decca operas with him at the helm!!! Needless to say, I was very impressed with the sound quality of this recording.
La somnambule is a ballet-pantomime composed by Ferdinand Hérold and premiered on 19 September 1827 at the Académie Royale de Musique. The scenario was by Eugène Scribe, and it was choreographed by Jean-Pierre Aumer.
Apparently, some of Hérold’s music in La Somnambule contains ideas borrowed from Auber and Rossini, but they must be so well reworked that none sound familiar to me. Certainly, the style of tracks 17 and 18 conveys strong Rossinian characteristics, yet with their kaleidoscope of orchestral colour I feel that this music is on a level with that found in the Tchaikovsky ballets.

Herold - La Fille Mal Gardee; Lecocq - Mam'zelle Angot. For this recording we have Richard Bonynge conducting the National Philharmonic Orchstra. This is the only recording ever produced of the Lecocq score as arranged by Jacob for Massine's definitive 1947 staging. The music is beautifully tuneful and colorfully orchestrated, with many sweeping, danceable movements reminiscent of Drigo or Delibes. This recording of "Mam'zelle Angot" is also included on the 10 CD boxed-set "Fête du Ballet" (Decca 468 578-2) along with many other out-of-print releases of rare and obscure ballet music conducted by Bonynge.
