With Celestial Weather, Smith and Lindberg employ a spare, conversational approach. Smith whispers on the mute and issues plaintive cries with the open horn. Lindberg bows and goes pizzicato. Unlike Smith's large scale offerings, that often feature massive cacophonies, space is a major facet of the sound. It is music that is reflective and serene.
In the Japanese martial arts partner- practice known as kumite, the notions of leader and follower or attacker and receiver sometimes dissolve into an undifferentiated flow. Such is the tao of Celestial Weather. Longtime collaborators Wadada Leo Smith, the 74-year-old trumpeter who came to prominence in the Chicago avant- garde, and John Lindberg, the 56-year- old bassist of the String Trio of New York who played extensively with Anthony Braxton in the 1980s, erase the boundaries of conventional give- and-take or call-and-response on this studio recording. While their instruments could hardly.
The performer/composers John Lindberg & Wadada Leo Smith have been close collaborators in myriad settings since 1978. In 2015, their first album as a duet was released, Celestial Weather, on TUM Records, to substantial critical acclaim. To build upon the impact of this release, the duet will be doing a number of performances in 2016.
Wadada Leo Smith trumpet John Lindberg double bass. TUM CD 046 (Finland). Recorded at Sear Sound Studios in New York City on June 16, 2012. Thanks to snobb for the addition. No release results found : showing artist results instead. Recorded just by trumpeter and double bassist duo, this album is surprisingly filled with music. Sounds are clear and often quite ascetic, but it is not an album where nothing happens or where silence is a big part of recorded sound. It is quite different from Smith more bombastic works and probably not every fan of Great Lakes Suites or Ten Freedom Summers will like "Celestial Weather", but in on its own way this new release is a really important example of Wadada's creative legacy.
Celestial Weather is an album by American jazz trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith and bassist John Lindberg, which was recorded in 2012 and released on the Finnish TUM label. Although they have played together as a duo over the years, this album is their first duo recording. Each is a cascade of curt phrases that manage to solidify as they align with those of their mate.
