The Soprano Saxophone Concerto is like a melodic tone poem or aria, and considered the most Romantic concerto Hovhaness ever wrote. Inspired by the wonders and mysteries of astronomy and appearing here in its première recording, the Symphony No. 48 ‘Vision of Andromeda’ expresses the vastness of this galaxy through giant melodies, shimmering orchestral colors and a transcendent apotheosis.
Album · 2009 · 9 Songs. Classic Saxophone Concertos Gary Louie. Bohdan Jarmolowicz, Polish National Chamber Orchestra Slupsk & Greg Banaszak.
Greg Banaszak's "Saxophone Concertos" is one of finest recordings to date. I would recommend this CD to not only students but also anyone who appreciates classical music because the soloist, ensemble and interpretation are all superb. The CD opens with a transcription of Rachmaninoff's "Vocalise" and from the first note the listener is drawn into Mr. Banaszak's tone. This recording exuberates excellence in saxophone performing. Greg Banaszak has done the unimaginable: record four concertos and the Vocalise in only a few days on the same recording. Mr. Banaszak utilizes a warm, rich sound that is consistent throughout the entire saxophone which is then complimented by the lush, full sounds of the Polish National Chamber Orchestra. The Dubois is particularly astonishing. Banaszak exposes and conquers some of the most difficult qualities of the saxophone.
