Beethoven: The Late String Quartets Nos 12-16. I rate Beetoven's late quartets as the most beautiful music ever written. I trully agree with that.

The Lindsays are an establishment in the world of the string quartet, and their interpretations of Beethoven in particular are compelling, almost mesmerising. Volume nine of their second Beethoven cycle looks at two of the late quartets, the pinnacle of the master’s chamber music. The fourteenth, o. 31, falls into the difficult key of C minor, not easy for a string quartet to keep in tune, but the Lindsays manage it with hardly a falter

The Lindsay String Quartet - not then "The Lindsays" - recorded this, their first, Beethoven cycle to hyperbolic acclaim in the UK and to derision elsewhere. So much heart!" claimed the former; "But so rarely with the correct intontation!" objected the others. their Beethoven, alas, I have not heard.
Historically referred to as Beethoven's "Late Period," the six string quartets featured here are Beethoven's final compositions, written between 1822 and 1826, considered among the greatest contributions to the arts in Western civilization. All the sessions were produced by first violinist Cecily Ward and recorded at Skywalker Sound using a matched pair of Sanken CO-100K microphones. 96 kHz, 24-bit PCM – AVIE Records Studio Masters.

I have two recordings of the late quartets - the first one is by the Emerson String Quartet, the second is by the Takacs Quartet. Hands down, I love the Takacs recording, and highly recommend it. Actually, their recordings of the entire cycle are excellent. I is sick of revisionist string quartets. Nov-27-2012, 23:01 #13.
