Blue Note’s iconic album art truly encapsulated jazz, using new techniques and style to create a look that, for many fans, came to define the genre. Blessed with a talent for candid photography, Francis documented all aspects of the Blue Note recording sessions, from the performance itself to the downtime afterwards. Images were then selected and paired with conventional text to create the covers. This was the standard for album art until American-born graphic designer Reid Miles joined the operation in the mid-1950s.

If a jazz enthuasiast's listening discoveries were contemporaneous with the original release of the Blue Note albums mentioned in this book, he or she may have thought at the time that the photographs existed to promote the music through appearance on the album covers. That was only a small part of the story, it seems. Wolff shot over 30,000 photographs of some of the most significant jazz recording sessions of the 1950's, not to mention documenting the faces of the label's artists from Meade Lux Lewis in the early 1940's to Jimmy Smith in the 1960's

Listen to his album, The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery, so many great licks in one album! Check out his sweep picking lines that use only his thumb and listen to his use of octaves. The chosen lick is from the track Our Own Sweet Way at 2:17. His album World’s Fair is a series of beautiful acoustic guitar compositions that although may be near impossible for us to play, can still be an inspirational endeavour to attempt. Even hearing this album may lead to new ideas for songwriting as there is nothing quite like it out there. The lick is from the track Day and Age at 0:46.
The album, which also featured a 19-year-old Sonny Rollins, is one of the best jazz albums by a pianist; it tore up the rule book and served as a memorable introduction to a phenomenal musical talent. Key song: ‘Bouncing With Bud’. 47: Weather Report: Heavy Weather (Columbia). The Incredible Jazz Guitar O. as his third album but the one that truly put the Indianapolis guitarist on the jazz map. Montgomery’s sidemen (pianist Tommy Flanagan, Modern Jazz Quartet bassist Percy Heath, and his brother, drummer Albert Montgomery) offer sterling support on a varied selection of original tunes (‘Four On Six’, ‘West Coast Blues’ and ‘Mr Walker’), covers (Sonny Rollins’ ‘Airegin’ and Dave Brubeck’s ‘In Your Own Sweet Way’) and standards (‘Polka Dots And Moonbeams’).
