Armenia - Traditional Music. Armenia - Traditional Music.

Album · 2005 · 14 Songs. Traditional Dances of Armenia Gevorg Dabaghyan. Listen on Apple Music.

The music of Armenia has its origins in the Armenian Highlands, where people traditionally sang popular folk songs. Armenia has a long musical tradition that was primarily collected and developed by Komitas, a prominent priest and musicologist, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The Naghash Ensemble combines the earthy spirituality of Armenian folk song, new classical music, contemporary post-minimalism and the energy of rock and jazz. Three brilliant female vocalists and some of Armenia’s finest instrumentalists on duduk, oud, dhol and piano play new music based on sacred texts by the medieval Armenian mystic poet and priest, M’krtich Naghash. The idea for The Naghash Ensemble came when I first heard Hasmik Baghdasaryan singing in Garni temple outside of Yerevan, Armenia. She sang mostly medieval Armenian spiritual music and the acoustics at Garni are astounding.

This 2-CD album of folk music, performed by the Shoghaken Folk Ensemble and the Sasun Folk Group, is filled with wonderful slow ballads and laments and medium tempo dances. Armenia, while at the edge of Europe, is more strongly influenced by Persia and to lesser extent Turkey, and it has adopted the Persian kamancha fiddle and the Near Eastern qanon zither. The shrill double-reed zurna and its kin are found in many world folk traditions, and the shevi, an upper range reed flute, is heard, but it is the duduk, as melody and as drone, which anchors the sound. These recordings of traditional folk tunes may leave you a little sad but filled with an appreciation of a rich and old music.
