Piano Sonata In F Minor, Op. 57 ("Appassionata"). 3-4. I Allegro Assai. 3-5. II Andante Con Moto. 3-6. III Allegro, Ma Non Troppo - Presto.
Andras Schiff's splendid traversal of the Beethoven piano concerto cycle is definitely one worth owning. His performances are richly steeped in lyricism and poetic beauty (OK, the first of the brocades has made an appearance). The first horror here is Schiff’s Appassionata – the so-called bonus. There comes a point where the word bowdlerisation runs out of puff: here is one instance.

Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 57 (colloquially known as the Appassionata, meaning "passionate" in Italian) is among the three famous piano sonatas of his middle period (the others being the Waldstein, Op. 53 and Les Adieux, Op. 81a); it was composed during 1804 and 1805, and perhaps 1806, and was dedicated to Count Franz von Brunswick.

Andras Schiff: piano. Beethoven sonata cycles are occasions, but they dont always make history. The recordings are luminous. Although they were recorded live in Zurich, Switzerland, they reveal a kind of preserved freshness. An ideal piano dances in imaginary space. Everything in Beethoven can be heard, savored, adored. Andras Schiff: The Beethoven sonatas can be logically divided into three distinct groups: early, middle and late. And this way the listener is able to follow the process of evolution, step by step. It is a learning experience; we are fellow travelers on a fantastic voyage.
