When the Levee Breaks" is a country blues song written and first recorded by Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie in 1929. The lyrics reflect experiences during the upheaval caused by the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. When the Levee Breaks" was re-worked by English rock group Led Zeppelin as the last song on their untitled fourth album.

When the Levee Breaks" is a blues song written and first recorded by husband and wife Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie in 1929. The song is in reaction to the upheaval caused by the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. According to the When The Levee Breaks Songfacts, African-American plantation workers were forced to work on the levee at gunpoint, piling sandbags to save the neighboring towns.

When the Levee Breaks’ is probably the most subtle thing on as far as production goes, because each twelve bars has something new about it, though at first it might not be apparent. There’s a lot of different effects on there that, at the time, had never been used before. Phased vocals, a backwards echoed harmonica solo.

When the Levee Breaks' comes in at No. 13 on our list of the Top 50 Led Zeppelin Songs. Inspired by the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927, 'When the Levee Breaks' was written and recorded by Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie in 1929.
