This fitting tribute to legendary conductor Rafael Kubelik features performances of Mahler's Das Klagende Lied, Brahms's Rhapsodie O. 3 and excerpts from Schoenberg's monumental Gurre Lieder. He leads the Symphonie-Orchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks in performances that proved him to be a worthy successor to Furtwangler, Walter and Kleiber. tearing myself apart in fact - to give something each time and not take. Taking is not worthy of a musician.

Brahms: Alto Rhapsody, Op. Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks & Symphonie-Orchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. Grace Hoffmann (contralto). Schoenberg: Gurrelieder: excerpts. Herta Töpper (mezzo) & Inge Borkh (soprano), Herbert Schachtschneider (tenor), Kieth Engen (baritone). Kubelik was a great Mahlerian, and for specialists his two-part Das klagende Lied is a significant addition to the discography. For others, the off-air recording may be unappealing.

An unexpected Kubelik live concert. In 1929 Franz von Hoesslin and the Walther Staram Concert Orchestra issued recorded excerpts from Das Rheingold on five 78rpm discs. The first recording of the complete Rheingold was taken from a New York Metropolitan Opera production in 1937, with Artur Bodanzky conducting.
