Violin Sonata No. 2 in A Minor: I. Allegro by Steinberg Duo & John Ireland. In MP3 Basket View MP3 Basket. The Violin Sonata in G sharp (1945) is broadly tonal in nature. The first movement is extremely attractive and the second movement has some influences from Shostakovich. Geoffrey Bush (1920-1998) attended Lancing College and studied with John Ireland. The second violin sonata of John Ireland (1917) is one of the finest violin sonatas of the English musical renaissance and caused quite a stir when first performed. Ireland is suffering a period of relative neglect at present, and even though he preferred writing in smaller forms – songs, piano works, chamber pieces and smaller scale orchestral ones (apart from a piano concerto), he was one of the great British masters of the 20th century. This violin sonata is a good example of his highly individual style.
Franz REIZENSTEIN (1911-1968) Violin Sonata in G sharp, O. 0 (1945) Geoffrey BUSH (1920-1998) Violin Sonata (1945) John IRELAND (1879-1962) Violin Sonata N. in A minor (1917) Steinberg Duo: Louisa Stonehill (violin), Nicholas Burns (piano) rec. January 2016, Françoys-Bernier Concert Hall, Domaine Forget, Saint-Irénée, Quebec LYRITA SRCD. This triptych of British violin sonatas bears a wartime theme. Cast in one movement, the 18-minute sonata by Bush has hardly ever been performed. Its sense of chromatic flux is attractive and so too is its ripe lyricism. Possibly Reizenstein’s best-known violin work is the 1939 Prologue, Variations and Finale, recorded shortly thereafter by Max Rostal and the composer, and once more to be found on a generous Dutton CD. 2 in A Minor: II. Poco lento quasi adagio. 20: I. 1: II. Andante. Violin Sonata in E minor, O. 2: III. Allegro non troppo. Elgar & Sawyers: Violin Sonatas.
Alexander Scriabin's Sonate-Fantaisie in G-sharp minor (or Sonata-Fantaisie) was composed in 1886, when he was fourteen. It was dedicated to Natalya Sekerina, the sweetheart of his adolescence. A portentous introduction leads to a gentle, idyllic first movement highly reminiscent of Chopin in its flow of melody. The opening Andante gives way to a more agitated sonata movement.
