Before the American folk revival of the late '50s, the Weavers proved that traditional music, when presented in the proper fashion, could be wildly popular. Rarities From the Vanguard Vault captures the group at a crossroads in 1957-1958. On the first half of the material, Lee Hays, Ronnie Gilbert, and Fred Hellerman are joined by bandmate Pete Seeger; on the latter half, Erik Darling replaces Seeger. Each version of the band is represented by ten tracks, including a number of recordings - four each - that were previously unreleased.

The sixth album is a collection of Decca era material. The Weavers On Tour, the follow up to their first Carnegie Hall concert, is not part of this package. Many of Vanguard’s releases offer way too much duplication of material, but this Rarities CD is a winner. Thank You! to VANGUARD for releasing these recordings. The songs and performances are as great as anything else the WEAVERS ever recorded.

Album - Rarities from the Vanguard Vault. Lord it's all, almost done. And I ain't gonna see those pretty girls no more. Take these stripes, stripes from of my shoulder. And take these chains, chains from around my legs. Well, these stripes, these stripes sure don't worry me. But these chains, these chains are gonna kill me dead. American folk music revival.
