Start with the opening bars of the Symphony No. 73 in D major, Hob. 1/73, "La Chasse," which may according to the listener's orientation seem etherally light or fussy and wandering. Try the brisk clip of the slow movement of the Symphony No. 82 in C major, Hob. 1/82, "The Bear," or the tense and utterly unjovial minuet of the Symphony No. 73, which comes out sounding like one of Cambreling's specialties, Stravinsky.

Symphony N. 3 in D major 'La Chasse' - IV La Chasse, presto XXVIII. Symphony No. 101 in D major - II. Andante XXIX. 3 in C major 'La Roxelane' - I Allegro 30. 6 in B - IV. Finale. The structure and form of the major works of Haydn dictates also how to evaluate or categorise his movements. Normally, if not exclusively, the First movements are all in Sonata form, which was, is and remain the brightest invention and the greatest achievement in Classical Music. So, the First Movements in the Symphonies, String Quartets, Piano Trios or Piano Sonatas have a different and greater weight, interest and value.

There was a two-CD set of ‘great’ Haydn symphonies: N17041/2. Also, a selection of the so-called ‘Stürm und Drang’ middle-period symphonies: N17072/3. And a further single-disc issue including (as the well as two of the Violin Concertos) the Sinfonia Concertante, Ho. :105, which Haydn wrote for his first London visit in 1792: N15518. The syncopated rhythms in the first movement of No 26 in D minor ‘Lamentatione’, for example, create a very real urgency, the repeating notes at the end of the opening subject being delivered with an almost Bartókian martellato. L'Ours’, Ho. :82 (1786) Symphony No 83 in G minor ‘La Poule’, Ho. :83 (1785) Symphony No 84 in E flat major, Ho. :84 (1786) CD26 – recorded September 1991 (No 85), September 1992 (No 86) and June 1994 (No 87) Symphony No 85 in B flat major ‘La Reine’, Ho. :85 (1785) Symphony.

The Symphony No. 82 in C major, Hoboken 1/82, is the first of the six Paris Symphonies (numbers 82-87) written by Joseph Haydn. It is popularly known as the Bear Symphony. The symphony was one of a series of six symphonies commissioned in 1786 by the Concert de la Loge Olympique, a popular concert subscription in Paris (hence the name for the series as a whole).
