What Patti Smith's album Horses meant to me, the girl from Mooroolbark. Smith says she never intended to make a record, yet it was out of these performances that her debut album, Horses, was born. Instead, she updated the album’s lyrics as call-to-arms for people to rise up against corporate interests ( We are all being fucked by corporations, by the military, she would spit. We are free people and we want the world and we want it NOW! ) and ensured that even the quieter moments such as Elegie – where she recites the names of people who have died, including Fred Smith, who died in 1994 – remained intense and emotional.

In this black and white portrait photograph the singer-songwriter Patti Smith is framed from her waist up and stands against a plain white background. She wears a loose white shirt which is roughly rolled up at the sleeves, with the top buttons undone. A thin chain hangs around her neck, the rest of which is tucked under her shirt, and a thin black band is worn on her right wrist. A black ribbon with a dulled shine and frayed ends is draped loosely around her neck. The portrait was taken during a session in which Mapplethorpe was shooting the cover image for Patti Smith’s first album Horses (1975).
Stand-up comedy grew out of minstrelsy and then vaudeville, which only makes it about a century old, tops. Some of the best practitioners of the form are still aliv. r at the very least, haven’t been in the ground all that long. Do you like observational and autobiographical stand-up? You have Robert Klein to thank. His first album, Child of the '50s (1973), wasn't just about the details of air raids and school dances – it painted a picture of the Eisenhower era in all its prosperity and paranoia.
Patti Smith was coined the ‘Godmother of Punk’, a hugely prestigious title, due to her original and unique fusion of genres, combining rock and poetry to create her music.
