The Grammy Award for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical has been awarded since 1959. The award had several minor name changes: In 1959 the award was known as Best Engineered Record – Non-Classical. In 1960 it was awarded as Best Engineering Contribution – Other Than Classical or Novelty. From 1961 to 1962 it was awarded as Best Engineering Contribution – Popular Recording. In 1963 it was awarded as Best Engineering Contribution – Other Than Novelty and Other Than Classical.

Though he wasn’t in attendance, Childish Gambino cleaned up at the 2019 Grammy Awards, becoming the first rapper to win Song of the Year for This Is America, which also nabbed Record of the Year. This year, the Recording Academy additionally recognized Kacey Musgraves’ Golden Hour as Album of the Year and Dua Lipa as Best New Artist. Cardi B didn’t win any of the general field awards, but she did take home her first ever Grammy for Best Rap Album for Invasion of Privacy, and her husband, Offset, joined her onstage during her acceptance speech, raising a few eyebrows.
The Grammy award for Album of the Year is awarded to the performer and production team of a full album. Four artists have won the Album of the Year award more than once. Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon have each won the award three times, while U2 has won it twice. Frank Sinatra and Stevie Wonder are the only artists to win in consecutive years. Stevie Wonder won the award three out of four years from 1974 to 1977 only interrupted by Paul Simon who won it in 1976. Paul Simon was the winner once as a member of Simon and Garfunkel and twice as a solo artist.
Bruno Mars was the big winner at the 60th annual Grammy Awards, beating out the smash hit Despacito for Song of the Year with That’s What I Like, and winning Record of the Year and Album of the Year for 24K Magic over Kendrick Lamar, Jay Z, and Childish Gambino. Lamar entered the night with seven nominations, and while he took home Best Rap Album, Best Rap Performance, Best Rap, Sung Performance, and Best Rap Song, he was shut out (again) from less genre-specific awards like Album of the Year, which has historically been unfriendly to rap and hip-hop, as well as Record of the Year.
