Toby Spence, Sarah Connolly, Yannick Nézet-Séguin & London Philharmonic Orchestra. 3. Das Lied von der Erde (Song of the Earth): III. Von der Jugend. 4. Das Lied von der Erde (Song of the Earth): IV. Von der Schönheit. 5. Das Lied von der Erde (Song of the Earth): V. Der Trunkene im Frühling. Toby Spence, Sarah Connolly, Yannick Nézet-Séguin & London.

Quebec conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin realizes this and directs the London Philharmonic Orchestra accordingly, with close-up energy, instrumental solos, and small detail privileged over weighty power. The songs featuring tenor Toby Spence have plenty of sass. There's still a lot of weighty power, of course, and the London Philharmonic, recorded live on apparently a single occasion, executes everything without noticeable flaws; the recording has a definite live energy.

Nezet-Seguin is a superb conductor and the London Philharmonic is rightfully the main star of this "symphony for tenor, alto and orchestra" that many consider Mahler's real 9th. Towards the end of the final "abschied," Sarah Connelly's "die liebe erde" may not have the great sense of occasion that Christa Ludwig brought to Klemperer's celebrated recording, but it is very beautiful nonetheless; and the first of the "ewigs" has an almost intoxicating sense of spiritual ecstasy that carries through right to the sublime ending.

London Philharmonic Orchestra. Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Toby Spence (tenor), Sarah Connolly (mezzo-soprano). Recorded: 19 February 2011. Recording Venue: Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre, London, UK. I. Das Trinklied vom Jammer der Erde (The Drinking Song of Earth's Misery). II. Der Einsame im Herbst (The Lonely One in Autumn). LPO Principal Guest Conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin has a great affinity with the German Romantic repertoire. His previous LPO Label disc, Brahms’s Ein deutsches Requiem, received great critical acclaim and is one of the most popular discs on the label. In Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth), Mahler married together for the first time the lyricism of the song-cycle and the formal ambition of the symphony, describing it as ‘probably the most personal composition I have created thus far’.

Gustav Mahler (1860–1911) Das Lied von der Erde. Yannick Nézet-Séguin conductor Sarah Connolly mezzo-soprano Toby Spence tenor London Philharmonic Orchestra Pieter Schoeman leader. In Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth), Mahler married together for the first time the lyricism of the song-cycle and the formal ambition of the symphony. With texts based on Chinese poems reflecting on themes of life and death, it contains some of the composer's most bittersweet music – joyful exuberance one moment, anguished heartbreak the next. Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the score very well and the LPO respond to him with fine and sensitive playing. John Quinn, MusicWeb International, 17 October 2013. Glorious playing from the LPO. a very special disc indeed.

With texts based on Chinese poems reflecting on themes of life and death, it contains some of the composer’s most bittersweet music – joyful exuberance one moment, anguished heartbreak the next. Yannick Nézet-Séguin perfectly captures the yearning for lost youth and resigned acceptance of mortality that pervades Mahler’s masterpiece. Hugh Canning - The Sunday Times - 29 September 2013.
