The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters (Spanish: El sueño de la razón produce monstruos) is an etching by the Spanish painter and printmaker Francisco Goya. Created between 1797 and 1799 for the Diario de Madrid, it is the 43rd of 80 etchings making up the suite of satires Los Caprichos.

Although the veteran metal quintet sounded newly invigorated on its last two albums, The Violent Sleep of Reason is easily the most organic-sounding Meshuggah album in over 20 years. Meshuggah’s first album in four years begins with a hushed one-two-three-four hi-hat count courtesy of drummer Tomas Haake. Unless you’re listening on headphones, you’re likely to miss it-the first subtle-but-tangible indicator of the human element Meshuggah made a conscious effort to recapture this time out.

Meshuggah's eighth studio album, The Violent Sleep of Reason, was released on October 7, 2016 and saw its highest first week sales in the . landing the band at on the Billboard Top Current Albums chart, on the Billboard Top 200, Hard Music, Independent Label and on the Rock chart. The album also reached the spot on the World Top 50 Chart.

The menacing implications, the violent sleep of reason Betrayal we all help sustain Humanitarian treason This deadly inclination, this forfeiture of innocence The sacrifice of guiltless souls for our own deliverance. The pain you feel Indifference thrust into your back Forged from our ignorance from our immorality A parody, this mockery To no avail you kneel before this our insanity.
