JANÁČEK Ballad of Blaník DVOŘÁK The Golden Spinning Wheel Interval JANÁČEK Glagolitic Mass (1927 version, ed Paul Wingfield). Sir John Eliot Gardiner conductor Pavla Vykopalová soprano Lucie Hilscherová alto Aleš Briscein tenor Jan Martiník bass London Symphony Chorus Simon Halsey chorus director London Symphony Orchestra. Janáček’s Ballad of Blaník and Dvořák’s Golden Spinning Wheel are both symphonic poems that take Czech legends as their inspiration – the first using the tale of Wenceslas as a vehicle to celebrate the peaceful regeneration of Czechoslovakia as an independent nation after World War I; the second a rather gruesome tale of greed, murder and magic.

The Dallas Symphony Orchestra (DSO) is an American orchestra based in Dallas, Texas. Its principal performing venue is the Meyerson Symphony Center in the Arts District of downtown Dallas. The orchestra traces its origins to a concert given by a group of forty musicians in 1900 with conductor Hans Kreissig. It continued to perform and grow in numbers and stature, so that in 1945 it was in a position to appoint Antal Doráti as music director.
