In the early '70s, their playing had become more focused and succinct in some spots and more adventurous in others. Keyboardist Keith Godcheaux, who'd joined the band to augment an ailing Pigpen in 1972, was a fully integrated and important member at this point, using sophisticated jazz chords that added depth to the material.

This is another one of my favorite releases. I disagree that the band sounds "listless", that they're "hobbled" by a single drummer or that Keith & Donna don't fit. Granted, there is a little buzzing coming from the amps and the the vocals do have that sort of metallic sound all of which are an artifact of the band's "Wall of Sound" sound system. The performances are all outstanding and the jams are filled that jazzy space sound that the band had during this time. Seriously, there isn't a weak cut on this release. The only complaint that I had at the time of it's release is that it wasn't a little longer. GDP was using 74 minute discs throughout the '90's even after 80 minute discs were being used by major labels. Three 80 minute discs would've allowed an extra song on each disc. It Must Have Been the Roses, Ship of Fools and Dire Wolf would've fit in well here.
