This first complete studio recording of Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen, made between 1958 and 1966, was a groundbreaking technical and artistic achievement, the most ambitious and intricately involved opera recording project of the 20th century. Produced for Decca by John Culshaw, whose vision and untiring devotion brought the gargantuan project to completion, the 14 ½-hour release set a new standard for opera recordings. Solti's epic vision of the Ring glows in its details and overwhelms in its sweeping drama. A number of very fine interpretations of the Ring have been recorded since, but Solti's version remains close to the top and in a class by itself.

Wagner: Der Ring des Nibelungen Ring Cycle. Wagner: Der Ring des Nibelungen- highlights ~ Karajan. Solti's late 1960's recordings of Das Rheingold, Die Walkure, Siegfried and Gotterdammerung were exceptional in that they featured the greatest Wagnerian singers of their time and the studio effects included anvils, horns and other slights of ears. In addition, there was no annoying live sounds like coughing or applause when compared to Karl Bohm's live Bayreuth Ring operas. On here we find the highlights from each of the operas, grand albeit short scenes

Das Rheingold Scene 4: Entry of the Gods Into Valhalla.

The four operas of Richard Wagner's cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen together take about 15 hours, which makes for several records, tapes, or CDs, and a lot of studio time. For this reason, many full Ring recordings are the result of "unofficial" recording of live performances, particularly from the Bayreuth Festival where new productions are often broadcast by German radio.

Fifty-four years after the first Rheingold sessions, there is still nothing like this history-making first studio recording-by conductor Georg Solti, the Vienna Philharmonic, and producer John Culshaw-of Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen, originally taped and released on LP from 1958 to 1966. But on the BD, when Birgit Nilsson hit one of her uniquely perfect high notes, the space-the hall-seemed to open up above and beyond my speakers. Or rather, the sense of musical space seemed to have grown.
