This album from Hänssler Classic features Norrington's performances with the ter Stuttgart des SWR of Edward Elgar's concert overture In the South ("Alassio"), the Introduction and Allegro for strings, and the Enigma Variations

Solo: Roger Norrington Conductor. Orchestra: Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra. Conductor: Norrington, Roger. In the 13 variations and finale the composer characterizes some of his friends, identified only by their initials - so to the public, this was initially a mystery, an "enigma" as to who it was. But Elgar also spoke about a well-known tune which he hid in his composition, which to this date has gone undiscovered – so indeed, there is a second enigma as well. In spite of whatever puzzle the composer may have intended, the work of highly effective, well structured, well orchestrated, colorful, and compelling

Lento-Allegro 05. Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, WWV 96: Overture. When Edward Elgar first ventured into symphonic music with his Op. 55, he had just celebrated his fiftieth birthday. Fame had come to him only a few years earlier with the premiere of the Enigma Variations in June of 1899. Unusual harmonic idioms, sudden changes of tempo, energetic rhythms and often abrupt dynamic gradations are hallmarks of Elgar’s First Symphony

Info for Elgar: Enigma Variations - Introduction & Allegro. The Variations on an Original Theme, or ’Enigma’ as it is commonly known, brought Elgar overnight fame when it appeared in 1899. The music is glorious from start to finish, especially in the serene Nimrod. Each variation is given a cryptic title referring to one of Elgar’s friends although the overall enigma behind the original theme has never been deciphered. Davis is marvellous at bringing out the subtleties of Elgar's orchestration
