MAX is an album by American jazz drummer Max Roach featuring tracks recorded in 1958 and released on the Argo label. A decade earlier, Roach had absorbed Kenny Clarke's drumming style and, with trumpet virtuoso Clifford Brown, forged his own brand of bebop. By 1958, on his way to becoming a true jazz elder, Roach began pushing the boundaries of jazz even further". All compositions by Max Roach except as indicated.

This 2-CD set gathers the complete studio recordings this group made (except one issued under Tommy Turrentines name) between July 1959 and January 1960, thus giving new life to one of the least known periods in Max Roachs intense jazz career. In addition, the songs featuring Abbey Lincoln catch this exceptional singer in fine form. 2, tracks from the Mercury album "Max Roach Quintet: Parisian Sketches" (SR60760). Some of his more overlooked recordings with his Max Roach + Four group are on Complete 1959-60 Studio Recordings (FSR 666).
