The Whisky Priests have always been an unstable entity due to the demands of the Miller brothers, but on this recording all of the members are holdovers from their previous release excepting drummer Nick Buck, although he would remain with the band for 1995's Bleeding Sketches, so if nothing else this group essentially stayed together for the sake of the band. Even though they never achieved fame, from an artistic standpoint, it surely would have been difficult to leave the Whisky Priests given the extraordinary talent that lies within. For an album that clocks in at well over 50 minutes.

The Power and the Glory (1940) is a novel by British author Graham Greene. The title is an allusion to the doxology often recited at the end of the Lord's Prayer: "For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever and ever, amen. It was initially published in the United States under the title The Labyrinthine Ways.

Greene isn't saying that priests can't be saints; he's saying that even people as offensive as this whisky priest can achieve what the saints achieve. He wrote a story of a saint that fundamentally deconstructs the genre's piety. More importantly, the moral failings of the priest give the story serious drama. At the end of the novel, we're left unclear about the final character of the whisky priest. Did he die courageously or cowardly? We can't tell because we see the execution from afar.
