The Phantom Lodge is another of those 90s curiosities which begs of the listener: just how serious do you need to take your black metal? For at least the first three records, Anders 'Blakkheim' Nyström was clearly taking the piss with Diabolical Masquerade. first with the personal and ludicrous Ravendusk in My Heart, an introspective journey of this silly alter ego he created, which straddled the dangerous line between symphonic, Gothic bombast and genre parody

greatest
The problem with Diabolical Masquerade isn’t that it was a side-project: October Tide started in the same manner, but managed to deliver at least a great album, before degenerating into repetitive Katatonia/Forgotten Tomb rip-off. The problem is that Anders Nyström founded this solo project with the sole goal of imitating other artists linked with the genre. Essentially a more flaccid and pseudo-adventurous Satyricon with hints of Old Man’s Child mediocrity, Diabolical Masquerade’s second album The Phantom Lodge repeats all of the debut’s elements and errors. During the whole duration, Anders repeats himself constantly, and not a single riff on this derivative album is to be remembered. The starting of “The Walk of the Hunchbacked” is particularly offensive.Highlights: “The Blazing Demondome of Murmurs and Secrecy”.
