December 1992 (No. 73), November 1993 (Nos. 31, 59), Casino Zägernitz, Vienna ELATUS 3-2 Harnoncourt tends to overdo the contrasts of tempo within the symphonies, and this is at its most controversial in the minuets and trios, as though he thinks that Haydn had under-characterised the music. The Presto tempo in the first movement of the Fire Symphony is very fast indeed, risking issues of articulation. 78-81 Audio CD. Ottavio Dantone. CD12: Symphonies Nos. 50, 43 Mercury, 58 & 59 Feuer. Symphony No. 59 (Haydn). The Symphony No. 59 in A major is a relatively early work by Joseph Haydn that is known popularly as the Fire Symphony  . As with most other monikers attached to Haydn's symphonies, the name itself did not originate with the composer. For a long time, the attributed title was thought to refer to the fiery nature of the composition, particularly the rather unusually spirited first movement (marked Presto, a tempo indication more typical of final movements) and the brief but energetic last movement, which features prominent horn fanfares and corruscating runs on the strings.
