Once heard, however, you’re hooked. The album finds Nelson more focused than many of his contemporaries in the 90s, ensuring that his songs aren’t swamped by the overarching themes that bring them together. 35: Semisonic: Feeling Strangely Fine (March 1998) The temptation may be to reduce Semisonic to ‘Closing Time’, the N. 1 US and Top 25 UK hit for which the band are mostly remembered. The first supergroup almost no one has heard of. Great stuff! Reply.
Glastonbury 2009 Volume 2. Brand New Rockers.
Fanny were the first all-female band to release an album on a major label; by the time of their third album, Fanny Hill (produced by Beatles engineer Geoff Emerick), they had hit their stride, making endlessly inventive hard rock. They continued through the mid-Seventies and broke up, largely forgotten - but not by David Bowie, who told Rolling Stone in 1999, "They were one of the finest fucking rock bands of their time, in about 1973. Guitarist Bram Tchaikovsky left the band after this album, and had a fairly successful solo career; the Motors broke up in 1982. The three Hudson Brothers wrote everything and played almost all of it and obviously have vast musical potential.

With this album, the listener is in danger of floating away in ecstasy. If I said the music washes over you, you'd think I was talking blandness. But Shahen-Shah is mesmeric. It's not like any jazz you've heard before; the unfamiliar syncopation and odd jagged arches of melody are emotively Slavic, but it's definitely the meandering, conversational jazz of the late 60s. The horn plays like a loon on a winter lake, but there is the joy of discovery, too, and possibly pictures of an imagined America.
One song that never made the album, became a B-side, or got anywhere past a handful of rehearsals is "Watching Rainbows," which John Lennon wrote before realizing wheel-watching was far more interesting. It's a rollicking number that absolutely would've made moptop mavens everywhere bob their heads in appreciation. That's likely why we've never heard "Mistake" in anything resembling official form. Mistake" is, without hyperbole, a country song. Affairs" is almost certainly the least complete song here, but it's a testament to the power of Queen that it's still a great song, even when half-built.

This this the quintesential U2 album. One of the best albums to come out of the eighties when almost everything else was mediocre at best. When I think of U2 this is the album that stands out for me. Other albums came close but this is their best work. If you have never heard this album you have to, U2 fan or not. It is their absolute masterpiece. It took me awhile to figure out The Unforgettable fire; I didn't understand why a band would make an album so weird and abstract.
