This 2016 Naxos release by Martyn Brabbins and the BBC Symphony Orchestra presents world premiere recordings of the Symphony No. 1 (1946-1959, revised 1965) and the Symphony No. 2 (1965-1971), two serious essays by Chagrin that reflect British symphonic writing of the 1950s and '60s. The emphasis on straightforward dissonant counterpoint and somber orchestration gives the Symphony No. 1 an austere quality that is highlighted in this severe interpretation. Brabbins and the orchestra play with clarity and rhythmic sharpness, but the music allows little opportunity for warmth or color.

Martyn Brabbins is Chief Conductor of the Nagoya Philharmonic, Principal Guest Conductor of the Royal Flemish Philharmonic and Music Director to the Huddersfield Choral Society. He was Artistic Director of the Cheltenham International Festival of Music from 2005 to 2007 and Associate Principal Conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra from 1994 to 2005. He studied composition in London and conducting with Ilya Musin in Leningrad, winning first prize at the 1988 Leeds Competition. Since then Brabbins has become a frequent guest with leading orchestras across the globe

The two symphonies are among his most important orchestral works. Both are dramatic, even passionate-not least in the beautiful slow movements-and full of contrasts, both within and between movements. Undeservedly neglected, they reveal Chagrin’s mastery of form and colour. com INFO prestoclassical. Musicians BBC Symphony Orchestra Martyn Brabbins - conductor. Track Listing Symphony No. 1 1. I. As the BBC Symphony Orchestra's fiercely engaged performances under Martyn Brabbins show, both symphonies are thoroughly worthwhile works, which for all Chagrin's self-declared cosmopolitan inclinations, seem to fit well into the British symphonic template of the 1950s and 60s. There are some echoes of French music, particularly of Roussel in the First Symphony, but much more of that work sounds close to Walton's music of the postwar period.

Tracklist: Sir Michael Tippett (1905-1998). Symphony No 1 1 Allegro vigoroso, quasi alla breve 2 Adagio 3 Presto 4 Allegro moderato ma con brio e più tarde con delicatezza. Personnel: BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra Martyn Brabbins (conductor)

Brabbins and the BBC Scottish Orchestra succeed admirably. Right from the top of Symphony No 1 the strings dig into their rugged lines with formidable power. This music is really going somewhere! Even when a lyrical impulse takes over, as it does periodically in the first movement and throughout the slow movement, Brabbins does not loosen the reins. I should mention how sensitively the taxing clarinet solo is played in the Adagio. The same challenges are more acute in the Second Symphony, which notoriously collapsed in a heap at its premiere performance under Boult.
