For the centenary of Michael Tippett's birth, the adventurous NMC company is issuing two discs that fill in important gaps in his recorded output. The earliest recordings of his music came not on commercial labels but on private releases with very limited circulation in the early 1940s. Equally, Tippett's own recordings of two of his symphonies, made for the BBC at the time of his 90th birthday, have never appeared on a commercial label, and now make a crucial addition to the catalogue. In comparison with other performances by such conductors as Colin David (Tippett's most devoted advocate) and Richard Hickox, these are not nearly as precise. The pace of his stewardship also tends to be a degree slacker, but the warmth and concentration displayed hold each movement firmly together, conveying logic even in the thorniest textures.
Tippett Symphonies Nos 2 & 4 BBC Symphony Orchestra/ Tippett (NMC D104). To mark the centenary of Sir Michael Tippett's birth, NMC reissues this classic 1995 recording of two of his symphonies conducted by the composer. The sessions were not without difficulties, as producer Martin Cotton recalls in the sleevenotes; it took Tippett quite some time to get the orchestra playing his music his way. That he managed it is apparent from the potent climax of the fourth symphony, the later and more interesting work. Two discs for the price of one, offering two-and-a-quarters lush hours of music, this handsome double album brings together eight substantial Palestrina works, along with the plainchant on which the first two are based. After specialising in Palestrina for 30 years, the Tallis Scholars bring a unique clarity and commitment to what is audibly a labour of love.
