Beefheart and his musicians made some great music. And no, Beefheart fans, I’m not getting into that particular wasps’ nest. Arguments for Beefheart’s genius as a composer/bandleader invariably turn on the fact, which is indisputable, that his musicians didn’t make such good music without him as they did with him at the helm  . Especially when the result is Trout Mask Replica, an album which is chiefly notable fo. ot sounding like anything else. Yeah, it makes internal sense. Yeah, they meant it to sound like that.

Experimental rock, blues rock, avant-garde. Singer-songwriter, musician, painter, poet, composer, author, record producer, film director. Vocals, harmonica, saxophone, clarinet, oboe, horn, shehnai. Beefheart eventually formed a new Magic Band with a group of younger musicians and regained contemporary approval through three final albums: Shiny Beast (1978), Doc at the Radar Station (1980) and Ice Cream for Crow (1982). Van Vliet made few public appearances after his retirement from music in 1982. Many of the lyrics on the Safe as Milk album were written by Van Vliet in collaboration with the writer Herb Bermann, who befriended Van Vliet after seeing him perform at a bar-gig in Lancaster in 1966.

Captain Beefheart’s music career stretched from 1966 to 1982, and from straight rhythm and blues by way of the early Rolling Stones to music that sounded like a strange uncle of post-punk. He is probably best known for Trout Mask Replica, a double album from 1969 with his Magic Band. A bolt-from-the-blue collection of precise, careening, surrealist songs with clashing meters, brightly imagistic poetry and raw blues shouting, Trout Mask Replica had particular resonance with the punk and new wave generation to come a decade later, influencing bands like Devo, the Residents, Pere Ubu and the.

The poet Ian McMillan chose Beefheart's pastiche of the easy listening tune Moonlight On Vermont on Desert Island Discs a few weeks back. Captain Beefheart was also a visionary in one other, often overlooked, way: he hymned the natural world in his own inimitably odd way on songs such as My Human Gets Me Blues and Wild Life. He was an ecological warrior long before it was fashionable. His death, after a long period of self-enforced seclusion, comes at a time when it is difficult to imagine anyone as eccentric – and as eccentrically gifted – finding a place in contemporary pop culture. In the era of The X Factor the old-fashioned showbusiness values that the 1960s rock revolution was meant to have swept away have returned with a vengeance. There is no place now in pop for the madcap and the beautifully demented, but there is always Trout Mask Replica. Approach with caution.
