Mozart's Clarinet Concerto in A major, K. 622, was written in October 1791 for the clarinetist Anton Stadler. It consists of three movements, in a fast–slow–fast succession: Allegro (in A major and in sonata form). Adagio (in D major and in ternary form). Rondo: Allegro (in A major and in rondo form). As there is no autograph for this concerto and as it was published posthumously, it is difficult to understand all of Mozart's intentions
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Clarinet Quintet, K. 581, was written in 1789 for the clarinetist Anton Stadler. A clarinet quintet is a work for one clarinet and a string quartet (two violins, a viola and a cello). Although originally written for basset clarinet, in contemporary performances it is usually played on a clarinet in A or B-flat for convenience's sake. It was Mozart's only completed clarinet quintet, and is one of the earliest and best-known works written especially for the instrument
There is no shortage of recordings of Mozart's Clarinet Concerto in A major, K. 622, but this one, made in 2002, must be among one of the most perfect ever committed to wax or polycarbonate or ferromagnetic disc. The gentle playfulness of the clarinet, avoiding the hindsighted melancholy generally applied to this work from just weeks before Mozart's death, is matched by the incredible subtlety of the orchestral accompaniment. In the conception of the two Ashkenazys, the clarinet is less a virtuoso soloist than a unique timbre in the orchestra, which contains no other winds.

Mozart - Clarinet Concerto in A. The Clarinet Concerto in A, K622, completed in 1791, the year of Mozart’s death, marked his farewell to instrumental music. It was also the first clarinet concerto to be written by a major composer – except that Mozart did not write it for the clarinet at all. In fact, it is rare that we ever hear this most famous of wind concertos played on the instrument Mozart intended – the basset clarinet, a clarinet that has four semitones added to its lower range
