Wand does traditional Bruckner smartly and without rhetoric. I've recently listened to Wand's Lubeck 8th and was again impressed by the sonics. We should all behave so grandly when we loose that special loved one. No, Wand does not fall into gushing and self-directed pitiful slobbering, and his demeanor, for me, recalls the courtly scene in the King Phillip II of Spain's funeral with music by Morales, to be found on the DGG "Archive" label. Don't delay but get your copy today and clear your mind and simply listen.
Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 7 in E major (WAB 107) is one of his best-known symphonies. It was written between 1881 and 1883 and was revised in 1885. It is dedicated to Ludwig II of Bavaria. The premiere, given under Arthur Nikisch and the Gewandhaus Orchestra in the opera house at Leipzig on 30 December 1884, brought Bruckner the greatest success he had known in his life. The symphony is sometimes referred to as the "Lyric", though the appellation is not the composer's own, and is seldom used.

Symphony No. 7 in E major, WAB 107 1. Allegro Moderato 2. Adagio: Sehr Feierlich Und Sehr Langsam 3. Scherzo: Sehr Schnell; Trio: Etwas Langsamer 4. Finale: Bewegt. Not so for Gunter Wand: in this live 1999 recording with the magnificent Berliner Philharmoniker, he has perfect faith that audience members will know where the climax is, and therefore doesn't insult their intelligence by throwing up a percussive flare. In the sublime Adagio, as in the other three movements of his heavenly Seventh, Bruckner composed with scrupulous attention to every detail of line, harmony, and form, and a conductor and orchestra who realize the composer's vision will always succeed. RCA's live digital sound is transparent and warmly atmospheric.
