Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951) began work on his Chamber Symphony in 1906 on the same day he completed his Chamber Symphony (the latter can be heard in a fine performance by Hermann Scherchen on a Tahra CD), but its completion took many years. In 1916 the elegaic first mvt. was completed, but the remainder took another 23 years to finish.

Kurt Weill's Seven Deadly Sins was written to a libretto by Bertolt Brecht as a "sung ballet", and recounts the allegorical adventures of the title character Anna, as she explores life and all its temptations. Written in an evocative and recognizably Berlin-esque style, it evokes the heady turmoil of the interwar years with its jazz inflected banjo and close-harmony vocal group. The concert opens with two orchestral pieces by Italian composer Busoni, written at the turn of the century.

Arnold Schoenberg, with whom Busoni had been in correspondence since 1903, settled in Berlin in 1911 partially as a consequence of Busoni lobbying on his behalf. worlds of middle-class respectability in which he was not at home, and the shadows of Schumann, Brahms and Wolf loomed too large. Schoenberg Ensemble conducted Reinbert de Leeuw, 1993, Koch Schwann, Mahler arranged Schoenberg and Busoni.
