Best of Dark Horse 1976–1989 was released on 17 October 1989 in the United States and 23 October in Britain. The album cover features a photograph of Harrison taken by Terry O'Neill. Poor Little Girl", "Cockamamie Business" and "Cheer Down" were omitted from Harrison's 2004 box set The Dark Horse Years 1976–1992, making the Best of Dark Horse compilation the only official release to contain the first two of these three tracks.

Best of Dark Horse 1976–1989 is George Harrison's second official compilation album and was released in 1989. It follows up on both his successful comeback album Cloud Nine in 1987 and the Harrison-led Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 the following year, also a big seller. The album covers Harrison's work released on his own Dark Horse Records label, ranging from 1976's Thirty Three & 1/3 to Cloud Nine and beyond. Best of Dark Horse 1976–1989 failed to chart in the United Kingdom and reached in the United States.

George Harrison's albums have been notoriously uneven, but despite the rough patches, his talent for songcraft never really left him, as the compilation The Best of Dark Horse (1976-1989) proves.

"WHEN HE WAS FAB"GEORGE HARRISON-BEST OF DARK HORSE 1976-1989: As a semi-solid sequel to GEORGE HARRISON's first BEST OF platter, which was equal parts FAB FOUR milestones he sang lead on and early solo hits, DARK HORSE 1976-1989 fills a much needed compilation gap in the "Quiet Beatle"'s career. With his out of the gate hat trick of Top Ten hits MY SWEET LORD, WHAT IS LIFE and GIVE ME LOVE behind him, this fifteen track sampler covers the era when he recorded for his own label DARK HORSE. Agreeable radio hits like the whimsical CRACKERBOX PALACE, JOHN LENNON tribute ALL THOSE YEARS AGO and JEFF LYNNE-produced GOT MY MIND SET ON YOU are all here. For some reason, THIS SONG, his cheeky answer to plagiarism charges for MY SWEET LORD, is not (and none of his comps include the euphoric Top 40 single DING DONG DING DONG). While incomplete in many respects, HARRISON's introspective material, sweetly spiced vocals and virtuoso guitar work make this anthology an acceptable substitute for his mostly out of print later albums.RATING: FOUR CLOUD NINE'S
