The second volume of Big Bands of the Swinging Year is a short program that only contains ten tracks on a single disc. Several of the immortal bandleaders and their orchestras are briefly highlighted, including Duke Ellington ("Take the 'A' Train"), Jimmy Dorsey ("I'm Just Wild About Harry"), Charlie Barnet ("Pompton Turnpike"), and Artie Shaw ("My Heart Belongs to Daddy").

The Big 18 was an all star big band that pays tribute to the swinging big bands of the thirties. The original idea came from Fred Reynolds, musical director of RCA Victor at the end of the fifties. Tracks from CD 2, from the 12" album "More Live Echoes of the Swinging Bands" (RCA Victor LSP-1983).
Space doesn't permit covering all of the moments, but it is only fitting that a track from the original Dave Brubeck Quartet ("Jump for Joy") is included. For this 50th anniversary Newport Jazz Festival will be Brubeck's 32nd appearance in Newport. He'll open the festival Aug. 11th-two nights earlier than usual with a sacred music concert of his work "The Gates of Justice," then return with his quartet for an Aug. 14th Fort Adams performance.
