Legend has it, contemporary bluegrass picker Sammy Shelor was introduced to the banjo at age four when his grandfather fashioned him a banjo from an old pressure cooker lid. Soon after, he got a store-bought banjo of his own and he began to frequent fiddle conventions and contests near his home in southwestern Virginia. In 1997 he released his first solo album, Leading Roll, on Sugar Hill Records for which he received the International Bluegrass Music Association award for best banjo player. This was not his first such award as he had also won in 1995, 1996, and again in 1998.

Bluegrass banjo fans will be pleased with the instrumentals chosen by Sammy for his first solo project. Sammy blurs the lines with a great rendition of Robert Johnsons "Crossroad Blues". The original instrumental Ernest T. Grass is gonna be right up there with some of the greatest banjo tunes ever written. Top notch guest vocal performances by Alan O'Bryant, Dan Tyminski, Ronnie Bowman and Shelor's former employers Matthews,Wright & King doing the Joel Hemphill and Marty Stuart gospel number "Without A Word". An all-star supporting cast of pickers including Tony Rice, Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush and more. Of course the star of " Leading Roll" is 5 time IBMA banjo player of the year Sammy Shelor who just seems to get better with age. This album will be 20 years old this year and have only one question for Sammy....."When are ya gonna do another solo project?
