Ignacio Berroa (born July 8, 1953 in Havana, Cuba) is a jazz drummer. In 1980 Ignacio left his country during the Mariel Boatlift, moved to New York and joined Dizzy Gillespie’s quartet in 1981, becoming the drummer of all the important bands Gillespie formed until his death in 1993. Ignacio Berroa has been recognized by many as one of the greatest drummers of our times.

One of the greatest drummers on the scene, Ignacio Berroa was born in Havana, Cuba in 1953 and by 1975 had become Cuba’s most sought-after drummer. He came to New York City in 1980, joined the Dizzy Gillespie Quartet in 1982, and remained the drummer for Gillespie’s multiple bands until his death in 1993. Berroa has also performed and recorded with McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, Freddie Hubbard, Wynton Marsalis, Tito Puente, and Mario Bauzá, to name a few. Tonight he leads pianist Martin Bejerano and bassist Josh Allen in a program called Straight Ahead from Havana.
