Pat Thomas is a San Francisco-based musician, music journalist and producer of music reissues. Pat Thomas was the founder in 1988 of Heyday Records. He later moved on to Water Records, and currently produces reissues at Omnivore Recordings. Heyday Records leveraged the commercial success of Paisley Underground bands as a springboard for new artists who captured the flavor of the 1960s American and British folk scene, particularly local San Francisco artists such as Barbara Manning.
Pat Thomas is a Ghanaian highlife musician. Born in Agona, Ghana in 1946, Thomas early inspiration to become a singer was a vocalist Joss Aikins. Thomas started his musical career in 1960s when he collaborated with Ebo Taylor. In 1974 he formed the band Sweet Beans and with them he recorded his first album False lover. He recorded his second album Pat Thomas Introduces Marijata with the band Marijata. After the coup in Ghana in 1979 he relocated to Berlin and later settled in Canada.
PAT THOMAS is a third stream, jazz related djs/electronica/rap avant-garde jazz music artist. Pat Thomas started playing at the age of 8 and studied classical music and played reggae. He began playing jazz at sixteen after seeing Oscar Peterson on television then listened to snatches of jazz on the radio before, in 1979, playing his first serious improvised gigs. From 1986 he played with Ghosts which was Pete McPhail and Matt Lewis. In addition to programming his keyboards, Pat Thomas also utilises prerecorded tapes.
The album established Thomas across Ghana. Sweet Beans disbanded but the musicians stayed together as Marijata. The guys initially used Jewel Ackah as their vocalist but they involved me and I re-vocalled the album. This became the ‘Pat Thomas Introduces Marijata’ LP. At that time, I would go to George Prah at Gapophone to ask for money and he would say, ‘if you want me to pay you, go and write a song!’ So, tracks like ‘Coming Home’ came about that way, written on the spot. A second Marijata album followed before a damaging coup in Ghana in 1979.
Pat Thomas and the Kwashibu Area Band’ LP is out on 16th June via Strut Records. Pat and the band also play Rich Mix, London on 2nd Oct. Broadway Dance Band – ‘Wofo Nono’ Joss Aikins will always be at the top of my list of highlife singers. Jewel Ackah – ‘Bodambo Bodambo’ I worked with Jewel during the 1980s on his Electric Hi-Life album, and he was in my band for a while too. He’s a great vocalist. He was originally going to be a professional footballer but then joined a covers band, and ended up as the frontman for Sweet Talks during the seventies.
Pat Thomas was the founder in 1988 of Heyday Records. Thomas also made pilgrimages to England, tracking down musical artists of the 1960s such as the Incredible String Band, Pentangle, Fairport Convention, Shirley. As a musician, Pat Thomas has been drummer and percussionist for bands such as Absolute Grey, and presently for the musicians' collective Mushroom, which he founded. While each track works a groove toward heady epiphany, the album as a whole refuses to stay locked into any one genre.
