James DePreist ‎– Respighi's Rome. Label: Delos ‎– DE 3287. Fountains Of Rome (Fontane Di Roma). 1. The Giulia Valley Fountain At Daybreak. 2. The Triton Fountain In The Morning. 3. The Trevi Fountain At Midday. 4. The Villa Medici Fountain At Sunset.

James DePreist, conductor. Maestro DePreist and his Oregon Symphony once again enchant and excite on Delos! This timeless journey through Respighi’s Rome, transports the listener via music to the Eternal City. Featuring the beloved Fountains of Rome, the evocative Pines of Rome and pictorial Roman Festivals this sonically superior disc is a perfect recording for every kind of listener, inspired by the extraordinary insight of maestro DePriest and the interpretive sensitivity offered by the Oregon Symphony.

Already I can hear Respighi’s detractors carping, What musical values? But surely enough time has passed that we enjoy these striking works for their innovative colors and construction and not merely as spectacles. Album Title: RESPIGHI'S ROME Reference Recording: Three Works: Muti (EMI), Pines & Festivals: Bernstein (Sony), Festivals: Lopez-Cobos (Telarc). OTTORINO RESPIGHI - Fountains of Rome; Pines of Rome; Roman Festivals. DePreist, James (conductor).

The Music Otto Respighi’s own brand of late Romanticism is heard in a somewhat curious light in the 1925 ‘almost-concerto’ constructed on a medieval scale (the Mixolydian mode) and using a well-known plainsong theme. In a curious twist of cultural fate, it ends up sounding rather like a 60s film score conjuring an image of well-coiffed Hollywood actors in togas.

James Anderson DePreist (November 21, 1936 – February 8, 2013) was an American conductor. DePreist was one of the first African-American conductors on the world stage. He was the director emeritus of conducting and orchestral studies at The Juilliard School and laureate music director of the Oregon Symphony at the time of his death. DePreist was born in Philadelphia in 1936. He was the nephew of contralto Marian Anderson.

Format: CD. James DePreist. Ottorino Respighi – Fountains of Rome (Fontane di Roma), P. 106. Respighi – Pines of Rome (Pini di Roma), P. 141. Respighi – Roman Festivals (Feste romane), P. 157.

DePreist is an outstanding conductor and has built the Oregon Symphony into a formidable group. One more: Mariss Jansons and the Oslo Philharmonic do a great job with this music on their EMI release.
